This afternoon, my mother, lifelong friend of 30 years and I are taking my daughter to see the newly reimagined Beauty and the Beast.  And I don’t know who is more excited.  No, that’s a lie.  I do.  It’s me!

Nostalgia is a big business.  And they sure know how to suck me in!  The movie and music industry know exactly how to pull on the heart strings of my generation by recreating updated versions of cult classics and staging comebacks of icons we grew up with.  For example, the Transformers movie released in 2007 (bringing back lazy afternoons playing on the floor of my brother’s bedroom with his Optimus Prime Cab Trailer) and the resurgence of my not-so-secret obsession over New Kids On The Block with their 2008 album, The Block, after a 14 year hiatus.

The original animated Beauty and the Beast was in theaters in 1991.  I was 11 years old and in love with the music of the film and the amazing animation that filled the big screen (remember how awesome the landscape looked the first time we caught Belle running for the hills….I want adventure in the great wide somewhere...yep, chills).  I actually watched it a few times in the theater when it was released and I remember the random details of some of those screenings.  The sticky floor.  The fact that I had to sit closer to the screen than I would’ve liked because it was sold out.  I remember the layout of the theater, which has since been gutted and turned into a Best Buy.  It then came back to the theater as a double feature with the movie Newsies, starring a young Christian Bale (you can add that to the list of nostalgia as it was released as a Broadway musical in 2012).  I watched it then as well.  It was with Beauty and the Beast that I took my solid place as a Disney fanatic.

My 4 year old loves Beauty and the Beast and meeting Beast at Disney World has been one of the highlights of our trips.  She always looks forward to seeing him!  So I can’t wait to see her reaction to this reimagined version of the classic.

I love sharing pieces of my childhood with my daughter.  What I love even more is experiencing a new adventure together based on the nostalgia of when my life was carefree and simple.  It takes me back to being 11 years old.  So this afternoon, there we’ll be, just a couple of kids in the movie theater with a bucket of popcorn enjoying what it sure to be a Disney classic all its own.

It was my favorite Disney story! How interesting to read your review! Our cinema had age restrictions! That’s why my Solomia couldn’t enjoy it but I and my husband.. We liked it!

Thanks for reading! That’s too bad about the age restrictions! At least you still got to enjoy it. I thought it was beautifully done!
