This January will mark the 7th January I have worked at a gym as a fitness instructor. Everyone knows what happens at gyms in January. Many people are out to make their New Year’s resolutions become a reality. They rush out to get a gym membership and eagerly take every fitness class available to them.
I’ve heard from both members and instructors that they hate this time of year. The fitness studios are swamped, you can’t move around and there isn’t enough available equipment. Trust me, I get it. It can be frustrating at times and you may long for February and March to come to get some normalcy and extra space back.
However, this thought process bothers me. At one point in time, maybe it was your New Year’s resolution. You decided X years ago to turn things around and get moving more. And yet here you are, averaging 5 classes a week and killing your workout every damn time! Kudos to you! That’s awesome!
So why not pay it forward? Why not go up to “the new person” in class who is there to jump start his or her resolution? It’s funny because the buddy system never stops working. It worked when we were in elementary school and needed a buddy on field trips. It worked in high school doing all those chemistry experiments. And it works now with these fitness classes. You buddy up so you don’t get lost. And trust me, these “new people” feel that way. They are putting themselves out there to do something new. Help them not feel so lost. Help them feel accepted and motivate them. Let them motivate and challenge you too!
Maybe you’re the “new person”. Maybe you’re “the regular”. Either way, we all can help each other during this new beginning of 2017!
