Yesterday was my firstborn’s birthday. He turned 60. Well, technically my miniature pincher turned 11, but according to Pedigree’s dog to human years calculator, he turned 60.
It was a cold February evening in 2005. I was stuck on mass transit, holding onto the seat handle at my right and clutching my laptop bag in my left on the smelly standing room only bus. But I didn’t care. I knew that today would be the day my cute little puppy would be arriving at my house. My boyfriend (now husband) was picking up my baby minpin and they would be waiting for me when I got out of work.
After the long commute home, I opened my front door. There he was. My Rocco! We played on the kitchen floor, his tiny paws sliding on the cold tile. It was love at first sight! My first baby! Over the last 11 years, I’ve watched Rocco learn and grow, but there’s so many times he still acts like my little puppy. He’s only got more gray hairs!
The love of a dog is a very different kind of love. There are no questions, there are no expectations. There is only love. This is why the bond between a person and their pet is so strong. The animal is more than just a pet, he or she is just as important as any member of the family. After my daughter was born, Rocco welcomed her into the family. I enjoy watching them nap, cuddled together on the couch. He patiently lets her little hands put flower stickers on him for his “doggy makeover”. They occasionally fight over who will get to sit on my lap and it reminds me of siblings fighting over Mommy’s attention.
It is extremely hard watching Rocco get older. He is still vivacious and full of life, running and barking. But I can tell he gets a tad bit slower each year. And that breaks my heart. I am blessed to have spent the last 11 years as the mom to my “fur baby”. I am even more blessed to have shared the joy of having such a wonderful dog with my daughter. I don’t even want to think of the day when he may not be with us anymore. I can not come to grips with that day. But I do know that Rocco, my original baby, my loving puppy, will always be in my heart. When it comes to him and I, there is only love.
Happy Birthday my baby!
