Have you ever loved a song the moment you heard it until suddenly its on every 10 minutes on 3 different Sirius stations? Now that beautiful song is like nails on a chalkboard. Have you ever bought an amazing pair of boots only to find everyone and their mother wearing them every single place you go? Now the boots you decided to splurge on are either sitting in your closet or you match every other person you encounter. This is how I feel as the fall season is rolling in. Everywhere you turn there’s something PUMPKIN!
As a pumpkin lover, the rise in everything pumpkin should have been the stuff dreams are made of. However, this is not the case. Before every single brand seemed to throw pumpkin into their products and well before the act of consuming a Pumpkin Spice Latte was considered “basic” behavior, I loved pumpkin. I am talking about back in the day when grocery stores would only fill side tables with pumpkin pies and loaves of pumpkin bread. It was a sweet and spicy treat to look forward to when the leaves began to change color and a new crisp chill was introduced to the air. It signified the beginning of the festive seasons approaching. In high school, pumpkin pie Yankee Candle tea lights were a “must” in my room to launch the season. When Godiva introduced their Pumpkin Spice truffles, my love for pumpkin was solidified. Then 12 years ago, when Starbucks debuted the PSL, the love affair was taken to a whole other level.
Unfortunately, Starbucks did something both wonderful and damning at the same time. With the introduction of their much loved product, they unknowingly inspired countless other companies to jump on the pumpkin bandwagon. So as pumpkin flavored EVERYTHING began to pop up in grocery stores EVERYWHERE, I encountered many products that gave pumpkin a bad name. Why must everything be done in excess and ruin something so sacred? What used to be special about the great fall flavor was now just overdone. It was as if a secret I had held close to my heart for decades had been leaked to the masses.
I will always look forward to my Starbucks PSL and my Godiva Pumpkin Spice Truffles. No one can destroy my love for those products. I have also tried some pumpkin products along the way that will make it to my “must buy” seasonal list (Pinnacle Pumpkin Pie Vodka, Kahlua Pumpkin Pie Liquor, Jamba Juice Pumpkin Smash, Pumpkin Spice Oreos). But for the most part, I believe it’s safe to say that the pumpkin explosion has reached its peak. After all, do we really need Pumpkin Pie Shredded Wheat? Now please please please don’t ruin my love for Salted Caramel!
