Well it’s here! The unofficial start of summer! Our first warm weather long weekend! So break out the BBQ, sundresses and flip flops and welcome the sunshine.
There is something very different about this summer than summers past. For the first time in a long time, we have no vacation plans to speak of. No flight to the Caribbean or week down the shore. It’s staycation all summer long. I know I’ve been blessed to be able to have as many summer vacations as I’ve had. Don’t get me wrong, I’m aware that many families don’t do one every year. But I still couldn’t help but feel disappointed that no trip was planned.
So while I was pitifully moping, I started to think about the vacation-less summer ahead of us. I thought about the great vacations I’ve taken growing up as well as in my adult life. It’s always nice to get away as I believe a bit of scenery change is good for the soul. However, at the heart of every wonderful memory, one thing was constant. No matter where we vacationed, the greatest times happened because we were together as a family. Many memories from childhood vacations are still discussed to this day because of something funny or meaningful that happened during it. We have pictures on the wall of my daughter and I sitting on Disney’s Castaway Cay’s white sand beach. It was a beautiful day in such a picturesque setting. However, my most prominent memory of that day was laughing with my family as my daughter would sneak off with someone’s sandal and hide it in the sand. After realizing this, I stopped feeling sorry for my “boring” summer ahead. How could spending time with my family and friends be boring? Memories can be made anywhere, doing anything!
As I look to this summer, I can envision my little girl and I picnicking at a park, her telling me what she sees in the clouds. Evening ice cream runs while the sun paints a beautiful red and orange sunset. Movie dates and local fairs.
We may not get to travel this summer, but there’s still much to discover. Especially, when seen through the eyes of my baby girl, where there’s excitement and wonder everywhere.
